Araglin Animal Sanctuary Open Day.

I had an awesome day at the Araglin Animal Sanctuary in Cork, Ireland. I’ve been following their Facebook page for a while and seeing the great work they do. So I was really excited to see that they were having an open day as part of the Araglin Town Carnival. I’ll be keeping an eye on their Facebook page  for any future open day and I will be back with my camera.

 

Araglin Animal Sanctuary is has an amazing selection of animals, from goats and ponys, to moles, foxes and my favorite of them all was the Raccoons. The wolves were awesome too and particularly difficult to get a good picture of as they keep moving to the part of the enclosure that was furthest from wherever I was standing.

 

Well it has been quite some time since I posted on my blog I hope you all liked it, and hopefully I will start to post regularly on here. As always I hope you liked the pictures and feel free to like, comment, share and all that Jazz.

The Wedding of Tim & Céline.

On the 17th of November I had the honor and the privilege to be the photographer for the wedding of my friends Tim and Céline. It was a day that I will never forget, it was an amazing experience to be part of their big day both as a photographer and a guest. What follows are a taster of the many hours and hundred’s of photos taken during the day.

 

As I said earlier it was an incredible experience to be part of their big day and I wish Tim and Céline all the best for the future.

Mullinhassig Wood & Waterfalls, Aghavrin.

Here are some pictures that I took a few weeks ago when I went for a walk in the Mullinhassig Woods. It’s a really small wood but Poulanhassig Waterfall is like a jewel in the heart of it.A mermaid in the form of a salmon is said to reside in the waterfall pool, who, if approached quickly in late evening, can be seen combing her hair on a stone  to the left of the waterfall. If a stranger is sensed, she dives to the bottom of the pool. Near the brink of the waterfall is a boulder, said to be the mermaid’s ‘table’. Another version has the mermaid enticing unwary anglers to the bottom of the pool, where they spend the rest of their existence releasing fish from the hooks of fellow anglers. As you may have guessed I didn’t get enticed to live out the rest of my days in the rock pool.

Misty Morning.

I was up early this morning and was lucky to look out the window and see the really thick fog on the ground. So I decided to try and get some pictures of it. Instead of getting pictures from inside the fog I went up to the cemetery in Curraghkippane so that I look down on the fog from above. It was pretty awesome up there, the view of the city was completely obscured which was pretty awesome.

After I left Curraghkippane I wanted to try and get a pictures of the fog on the river so I took a spin down to the car park by the grotto on the Lee Road. Once I got there there was a load of spider webs on the on the nettles by the river and they were after catching the moisture in the air which was pretty awesome.

Save the Bees.

There was a spell of good weather in the last few weeks and I was lucky enough that these guys and gals stood still for long enough and I was able to get a few snaps of them collecting pollen.

The most photographed cats in the world.

I got myself a new lens for my camera during the week, its a canon 50mm prime lens. So to celebrate I spent the whole weekend taking pictures of the cats. Luckily for you they are the most handsome bunch of pussies in all the land. So I hope you enjoy the pussy pics.

Nohoval Cove: Sunset on the Coast.

A few days ago I made my first visit to Nohoval Cove on the coast in Cork. I was lucky that I got down there when I did as the sun was just starting to go down and the sky was awash with colours. Its a really cool spot, its certainly worth it to make the trip down there if you can.

Clouds: Looking up to the sky.

Around a week ago I noticed a strange blue substance in the sky, it looked like it was above the thick grey clouds that are normally there. I was informed by an intelligent person that the strange blue substance was called the sky and it appears when it stops raining and the clouds thin out. Luckily I had my camera close to hand to capture this phenomenon, as a result of trying to get a picture of this blue sky I got some nice pictures of the sky. I hope you enjoy them.

The next picture has lots of this blue sky and not so much of the clouds, but I like the picture a lot and wanted to include it anyway.

Galtee Mór. A sweaty day in the hills.

For years when I heard people talk about the the Galtee Mór I thought they were on about some kind of giant rasher, it turns out its a mountain. When I found this out I decided to go walk up it. I took my camera too because as you may have guessed I like taking pictures of things.

 

It was a great day for walking it was pretty much all blue skies and with the odd smattering of clouds, perfect weather for a sweaty walk in the hills. I hope you enjoyed the pictures let me know what you think in the comments below, thats all for now.

The Fireworks display for Queima Das Fitas in Coimbra.

Last week in Coimbra it was the student festival of Queima Das Fitas, its week long festival with lots of parties and drinking(kinda similar to RAG week in Irish Colleges). At the end of the week there was fire works display. I managed to get some pictures of the fireworks that I was happy with, they are the best but they aren’t the worst pictures I’ve taken, I hope you enjoy them.

 

If I was doing it again I would set up my camera closer to the left bank of the river to get a better view of the city but I guess there is nothing that I can do about it now.

Blue Team Vs Red Team. A Tale of dragonflies.

Hello again my friends and enemies, the subject of todays post is dragonflies. In the last few weeks I’ve been lucky enough to spot a few of these colourful bastards hanging around the ponds and still waters of Coimbra. They move through the air pretty damn fast so it was difficult to get pictures of them in flight so I just went with the lazy option and waited till they land.

P.S. After a little bit of research I think all the dragonflies in my pictures are male, as males tend to perch on things and watch while the females fly around depositing eggs. And I think the red ones are called Red-Veined Darters and the blue ones are called blue dashers but hopefully an expert can tell me if I’m right or wrong about my research.

 

P.P.S I just found out that the blue team is actually damselflies not blue dashers. Lesson Learned.

Its not easy being green.

There is a pond in the Jardim Botanico in Coimbra and in that pond is a load of frogs. The frogs are photogenic if you are willing to sit there are wait for them to start striking poses. I hope you enjoy the pics of my Amphibian Friends.

And for the last few days they have been really noisy and puffing their cheeks a lot.

Birds Part II, the quest for plumage.

For the last few months I’ve been trying to get out into nature and move as silently as possible so that I can get some decent pictures of birds. Compared to my previous post I made about birds I think these pictures are of a higher standard, I hope you enjoy them.

It turns out that Robins are pretty comfortable in front of the camera and enjoy having their picture taken.

Seagulls are an interesting bunch, I always think that if they could speak they would hassle you for cigarettes.

Creature of the night, creeping around in the dark with my camera.

Rings of Fire.

The other night I attempted to channel the spirit of the late great Johnny Cash by making  my very own ring of fire, I think I was relatively successful.

Coimbra, the city of Hills.

These are some of the picture of Coimbra that I have taken in the last few weeks. Its a really cool city but incredibly hilly which doesn’t agree with my feeble legs. But apart from the hills it has a really nice Botanical Garden, one of the Oldest Universities in the land and some nice parks and views so all in all its not a bad place to live.

Lightning, Sparks and the Night Sky.

So for the last few weeks I’ve been taking a lot of walks in the evening with my camera trying to get pictures around dusk when the light is just right. Sometimes you get lucky with the right combination of light, clouds, street lamps and water, here are some picture of those times.

The sun is either going up or coming down in this one I can’t remember which.

Sometimes when the light isn’t quite right you have to make your own light, to do this all you have to do is get some steel wool like the kind you use for scrubbing pots and pans, set it on fire whirl it around like you have never whirled before.

I kind of panicked a little with this one and just started spinning it anyway I could

Then other times you get really lucky and you managed to catch lightning striking, so luck in fact that you catch it twice.

I took like 80 pictures that night trying to catch the lightning and only managed to get like 2 decent pictures. This one I think is only okay.

I think this is my favorite picture that I have ever taken.

Dog Day Afternoon.

So the other day I was on the train and I saw a poster advertising a Festa dos Animais(Animal Party) in the Parque Muncipal de Oeiras so I decided to go along with my camera. There was a bunch of demonstrations from obedience schools and one from the Air Force, there were stalls selling pet apparatus and stall for adopting stray kittens. People brought along their pets too there was easily around 300 dogs in the park that day, below are pictures of some of the furry friends that I made.

The Golden Hour.

So the for the past few days I’ve been trying to make use of the Golden Hour, this the hour before and after dawn or dusk. The dusk one is pretty easy but for dawn I’ve actually had to use an alarm clock to wake up in the mornings which is something that I’m really not used to doing, but I think it was worth getting out of bed for.

My Flower Power is greater than your Glower Power.

Hopefully these will bring some colour into your life.Some these were taken in the Jardim Botanico de Coimbra, some were in various parks and gardens around Portugal and some of them were taken in back garden at home.

Gatos De Portugal, making furry friends

Here are some the cats I’ve met along the way.

 

These are the cats that I met in Coimbra.

 

The next gallery are the furry friends that I have made since I moved to Lisboa.

 

Ivy was abandoned but was adopted around a month ago

This cat lived in a park. He was in charge of controlling the local rat population.

Pilot Programme, Rodent bio-control, please don’t feed the cats.

I can only imagine the stories that this could tell(if cats had the ability to speak that is)

There is a family of around 6 black cats living in the same area

About 200m meters down the road from the Black Colony of cats lives the Calicos

This cat is living in the Fornos du cal in Paço De Arcos

I bought some food last night in order to bribe them into being my friends

They ate the food but dont seem to want to be friends yet.

While I was out taking pictures another lady came along and fed them too, so its good to see that they are being looked after.

Bit of a Harvey Dent thing going on here

The Moon, The Beach and Other Things.

I went for a walk on the beach with my camera for a daytime stroll and a night-time stroll, here are the results I hope you like them.

 

 

My muse.

Someone threw a bunch of flowers into the ocean, Im guessing it was either for a viking style funeral or an apology that didn’t go to plan.

I liked this rock with all the holes, a Geologist once explaied to me what forms them but I can’t remember what he said.

I like when water running down sand creates these trenches.

I think the clouds look pretty cool in this photo.

I love when the sea erodes holes through rocks.

 

The moon came out at around 8PM and it was absolutely spectacular.

the moon was something special last night.

I was hoping to get more pictures of the dog playing in the water, but it was late and I guess he had to go home to have his supper.

There were planes flying past every couple of minutes and I almost managed to get a picture of this one going across the face of the moon but I didn’t time it well enough.

Well anyways that is enough from me for now so stay tuned and I’ll try to update the pictures again soon.

Night Time Photography in Belmonte.

I went for a drive around the mountains in Belmonte in Portugal last Saturday here is some of the pictures I took. It was great to be able to get away from the lights of the city and take some pictures of the night sky.

i like this because you can see that someone was standing in the frame for a few seconds

this was taken higher ISO and the light pollution on the horizon makes it look like its dawn

this is the moon disappearing behind some trees,

 

As it was so dark I decided to try and do some light painting too.

I was really happy with how this turned out

it was cool to have a partner so that I could paint the scences better.

 

On the way home I though I would try to take some long exposure shots in a moving car. I had never tried it before so I wanted to see how it would turn out.

This was 5 second exposure time out the front window, you can just about see the tax and insurance in the corner of the windscreen

I think they look kinda Sci Fi like

Light Painting. A Journey from Darkness into Light.

In my opinion light painting is one of the most enjoyable forms of photography, it allows to get your creative juices flowing and you can make it as complex or simple as your heart desires. I’ve seen a lot of tutorials on youtube and read a lot about the subject online but sometimes they can make it seem overwhelmingly complicated so I’ve decided to share some of my ideas and what I’ve found works well with you good people.

To get started the only thing you need is a camera that allows you to control  the shutter speed, in an ideal world you use a tripod to hold the camera steady. When I first started out I didn’t have one so I would use anything around me to hold the camera steady. I used everything from a stack of books, to my shoes, to a table or anything that would hold the camera steady. Below is an example of the first light painting I ever did, it was done using a table to keep  the camera stable and  a candle in a jar as it was the only light source I could find.

 

 

Ok, so I’ll be the first to admit it’s not the most impressive looking picture compared to what you can find online, but its the first step on a journey that I’m still on. However amateur this picture looks it proves all you need is a camera and some imagination.

So my next step on the journey was to invest in a tripod and some lights. Seeming as I’m not a man with money, I couldn’t afford to buy one of the many awesomely cool sets on light painting tools online, (if you can afford these they look really cool and you can create some awesome pictures with them). So I just downloaded a torch app for my phone that changes the color on my screen and bought a really cheap tripod from a Chinese website. Armed with nothing more that a tripod and free app on my phone I waited till it was dark and went to the garden. To take the following pictures I set my DSLR to a 30 seconds exposure, and used some different color lights on my phone. Sometimes I find when light painting that less can be more, as you can see from the pictures below that too much light can cause the screen to go white(unless that’s the effect that you are going for.)

The next tool I thought that I could use was a cigarette lighter. I started out by just holding the lighter close to my face and then experimented with moving it around, and then got my best results with holding it close to my face for a few seconds, then I shut the lighter down and quickly moved to another position and lighting again. Just be careful with the lighter as it can get quite hot if its on for more than a few seconds.

If you have read this far then you have my thanks, as I really didn’t think it would take this long to type, if this was a TV show this is where we would break for commercials now but as its real life I’ll get back to typing.

The next tool I used and its probably the one that Ive had the most success and fun with is  a set of battery powered LED Christmas lights. I looked up some tutorials on making orbs on youtube found that the best thing to do with the string of lights is to duct tape the lights into a ball(this is a good tutorial on how to do it, I just bunched them up as I didn’t have the equipment for solder the wire). To make an orb simply swing the light in a circle and pivot on the spot so that you get the orb effect.

Tips:

1. Use a tripod to keep the camera steady.
2. Set a timer on the camera to avoid camera shake.
3. Take a test shot with the flash on so you can make sure the picture is framed correctly.
4. Put the camera on the Manual Focus as Auto focus can find it difficult to focus in the dark.
5. Be creative and have fun.

George The Cat

So I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to my partner in crime and one of my greatest friends. As you may have guessed George is a cat, but he is an awful lot more than just a cat, he is a master of friendship, hunter of mice, destroyer of moths and insects, an avid athlete and lover of scratches and rubs.

George entered my life almost 2 years ago, he was abandoned by his previous owners for reasons that I cannot even fathom. He was left on the doorstep of a friend of a friend as they were known in their area as people who love and care for animals. As his foster parents already had a large family of dogs and cats of their own a post was put up on facebook to try and get George a forever home. And after seeing one picture of him my housemate and I had no choice but to welcome him into our lives.

George is an incredibly friendly cat with very gentle personality(unless you are an insect or a mouse in which case he will do what cats do when confronted with such things). I am currently abroad traveling and and he is now living in my parents house along with a cast of colorful cat characters who  I will be writing about in the future. I hope you have enjoyed what is sure to be the first of many posts about this champion of a cat.
